CASE STUDY

Derrico Phillips

Derrico is an electrical installation student at Harrow College.

He spent two weeks in Portugal, in a placement focussed on HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning).

I wanted to experience a placement related to my course but in a different country. When I heard about the trip I jumped at the opportunity.

My placement

My work placement was challenging.  I was measuring and cutting air ventilation units and insulation, marking up and installing support beams, and putting the finished air vents onto the support beams.

It was really interesting to see how different it is to work in another country compared to the UK. My biggest achievement was understanding all the workers on site despite the language barrier.

The location

Our hotel was close to everything, the beach was a five minute walk. There were loads of restaurants nearby and the desserts were amazing!

What next?

Having this kind of work experience behind me and being able to put this on my CV gives me the edge when applying for a job.

I plan to continue with my course and get the grades I need.

My advice to others

No matter what task you are given, take it up and give it your all – it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity!
