CASE STUDY

Darragh Haughey

Darragh completed a 3 month placement in Prague, pursuing his ambitions in the field of architecture.

My placement

I worked on was a physical model for a housing project just outside of Prague. Through this, I improved my model making skills. I was also asked to research modular homes, and micro homes. I was able to feed my learning into the housing project plans and I have learned a lot about modular design. I gained skills in ArchiCAD. At the start of my placement, I didn’t know but I am now really confident using it!

Prague

Prague is an amazing city to explore. There is something new around every corner, and so many beautiful parks just a close walk away. Most weekends, we walked to a new park to experience the amazing scenery surrounding us.

Sadly, due to the pandemic, we didn’t have the opportunity to meet as many locals. However, everyone that I was living with was amazing. I could not have asked for a better group of people. My placement was so welcoming and friendly to me that it made working in Prague so easy and I am extremely grateful.

Cross cultural working and learning

Working in Prague was extremely fun. The biggest challenge was the language barrier, as certain phrases do not exist in English in the way they exist in Czech and vice versa. This has been further evident when working in ArchiCAD, because I was using the Czech language version exclusively, because of their licensing. This meant my initial progress was slow but I learnt navigate the program once I knew the key phrases and terms from repeated use.
